First grade in Mrs. Nowell's class

First grade will be an exciting learning experience for you child.  It is an important year for academic development.  On a typical day in first grade, we will spend our mornings doing language arts activities.  Our reading instruction is individualized and based on the specific needs of your child.  In the afternoon the children will participate in math activities.  Our mathematics program is hands-on with a high level of student involvement.  Science, social studies and health are integrated throughout the day.

 Your child will also experience a great deal of growth in the area of social development.  This is a time for first grade students to learn to listen to directions, take turns with classmates, care for their desk and materials and make positive choices. Students will work independently as well in cooperative groups throughout the school year.

Book Share

On Friday, October 19^th, Mrs. Nowell’s 1^st grade class read with Mrs. Geissler’s 4^th grade class.  The children had so much fun reading together and sharing stories with each other.  We can’t wait to do it again!

Homework

Homework will be sent home for the week on Mondays and will need to be returned THURSDAY.  Nightly reading is essential. Reading is a skill that improves with practice.  Please encourage your child to read at least 20 minutes per day.

Specials

Your child’s specials schedule will run as follows:

• Monday – Art (please bring a smock)
• Tuesday – P.E. (please wear sneakers)
• Wednesday – Music
• Thursday – P.E. (sneakers, again!)
• Friday – Library (be prepared to return borrowed books)
